Overview

Serving the Canadian life and health insurance industry for over 25 years, Jodi has provided legal, risk and compliance advice on all aspects of life and health insurance company operations, products, modes of distribution and dispute resolution including litigation.

Jodi retired from full-time in-house legal practice in 2023 and is presently supporting Fasken’s insurance litigation and regulatory practices in Vancouver.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2000 and British Columbia in 2023, Jodi has devoted her entire legal career to providing legal support to Canada’s life and health insurance industry. She has served as in-house Senior Counsel for several Canadian financial institutions. Jodi is versed in federal regulatory requirements relating to domestic, foreign and bank-owned federally and provincially regulated insurance companies, co-operatives and credit unions and has acted on several large global transactions. While in-house, her practice spanned all types of individual, group and creditor’s group life, health and travel insurance and non-insured products across all modes of sale and distribution (including digital). Throughout her career, Jodi held numerous legal, compliance and risk management positions including Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Privacy Officer and Chief Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing Officer.

Jodi also served as Senior Counsel for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) where she led several successful industry interventions including Gibbons v. Co-Operators at the Supreme Court of Canada and Amazon.com v. Canada (Commissioner of Patents) at the Federal Court of Appeal. She co-authored many CLHIA Guidelines and is recognized nationally in provincial insurance legislation reform. As a government lobbyist, she has represented the industry on timely issues such as privacy, CASL, genetic testing, medical assistance in dying, advisor compensation, gender identity and expression discrimination and digital transformation of insurance products.

Jodi retired from full-time in-house legal practice in 2023. As Counsel, she now supports the Specialty Litigation and Insurance Regulatory Departments in Fasken’s Vancouver office remotely from her home in Burlington, Ontario.
