With a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Julien brings a multidisciplinary perspective to the strategic management of intellectual property. He works closely with scientists, engineers, executives and in-house counsel to develop practical intellectual property strategies that support product development, manage competitive risk and create long-term value. Few practitioners combine experience as a patent litigator, patent agent and scientist, allowing Julien to advise clients at every stage of the innovation process, from invention and patent procurement to commercialization, enforcement and litigation.
His practice spans the full patent lifecycle, including patent strategy, drafting and prosecution, portfolio management, freedom-to-operate, patentability, validity, infringement and design-around analyses. Julien also drafts and negotiates patent licences, technology transfers and other IP-related commercial agreements, and advises clients in patent disputes and litigation. This broad perspective enables him to anticipate how decisions made when protecting an invention may later affect its commercialization and enforcement.
Although his practice is particularly focused on life sciences, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technologies, Julien also advises clients in advanced manufacturing, engineering, materials science and other technology-driven sectors. His clients range from startups and universities to established Canadian businesses and multinational organizations.
A frequent speaker and instructor, Julien presents on patent strategy, pharmaceutical and biotechnology regulation, artificial intelligence in life sciences, and IP commercialization.
