Overview

Toronto (Canada) – Five Fasken partners have been named in Who's Who Legal Thought Leaders: Global Elite 2022. Those recognized include Michael Bourassa, Jason Markwell, Peter Pliszka, John Torrey, and John Turner.

The guide brings together the insight, expertise and wisdom of some of the world’s foremost lawyers and experts across multiple practice areas. These individuals obtained the highest number of nominations from peers, corporate counsel and other market sources in their most recent research cycle. Typically no more than five per cent of practitioners in any WWL global practice area guide are selected as Global Elite Thought Leaders.

Widely recognized for his mining expertise, Michael Bourassa has been ranked in several leading legal publications including Chambers Global, Chambers Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. He has also been named by Who's Who Legal "Mining Lawyer of the Year" in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017, and has been recognized in their International Who's Who of Mining Lawyers, for more than 13 consecutive years.

Jason Markwell is a leading intellectual property litigator in Canada. He is well-known for his work on behalf of innovative pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in patent infringement and regulatory disputes. Jason has been recognized as a leading intellectual property lawyer by Chambers & Partners, IAM Patent 1000, The Best Lawyers Canada, Who’s Who Legal, IP Stars, Martindale Hubbell, Benchmark Litigation (IP Litigator of the Year, 2017), Managing Intellectual Property (Outstanding IP Practitioner - Canada, 2019), and LMG Life Sciences (Lawyer of the Year, 2018, Patent Litigation).

Peter Pliszka, a senior partner in Fasken’s Litigation Group, is regarded as one of Canada’s leading litigation lawyers. Peter’s practice is focused primarily on product liability, class action, commercial and insurance litigation matters, and it is national in scope. Peter Pliszka is Co-Leader of Fasken’s Life Sciences Group and the National Chair of the firm’s Product Liability and Insurance Practice Groups. Among other honours, Peter was named Life Sciences Product Liability Lawyer of the Year by LMG Life Sciences in 2016 and 2021; Best Lawyers in Canada (2021) named Peter Lawyer of the Year (Product Liability); and now Who’s Who Legal has named Peter one of only 12 product liability lawyers in North America as the “Global Elite Thought Leaders”.

One of Canada’s most highly regarded lending lawyers, John Torrey has a practice focused exclusively on lending transactions.  With experience in all areas of lending, John has particular expertise in project and acquisition financings and in all aspects of mine finance. He acts on behalf of both borrowers and lenders and has extensive experience with a broad range of financings in a broad range of industries.

John Turner is Leader of the firm’s Global Mining Group and Chair of the Securities, Mergers & Acquisitions Group. His practice is focused in the resource sector, where he has been involved in many leading corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions deals. One of Canada's national newspapers, the Financial Post, has described John as "one of the best dirt lawyers in Canada, if not the world." Recognized by Chambers Global, John also received Lexpert’s “Zenith Award” for his extensive mining law expertise.

About Who's Who Legal Thought Leaders

WWL Thought Leaders: Global Elite brings together the insight, expertise and wisdom of some of the world’s foremost lawyers and experts in a single report, featuring Q&As with dozens of eminent practitioners across multiple practice areas. These individuals obtained the highest number of nominations from peers, corporate counsel and other market sources in our most recent research cycle. Through interviews with the practitioners themselves, Thought Leaders: Global Elite aims to shine a light on what puts these lawyers and experts at the peak of the profession. They are worthy of special mention owing not only to their vast expertise and experience advising on some of the world’s most significant and cutting-edge legal matters, but also their ability to innovate, inspire, and go above and beyond to deliver for their clients.

Methodology

Global Elite Thought Leader: These practitioners are the best of the best across all of the WWL practice areas according to the publication’s research. Only those listed practitioners who obtained the highest number of nominations from peers, corporate counsel and other market sources in their practice area are selected. Entry into WWL guides, is, of itself, no easy feat, with fewer than half of those nominated obtaining a listing. The bar to be considered a Global Elite Thought Leader is even higher. Typically no more than five per cent of practitioners in any WWL global practice area guide are selected as Global Elite Thought Leaders.
