Overview

“Corporate dealmaking slowing as rising rates and inflation take their toll” by Barbara Shecter, Financial Post

Financial Post quotes Toronto lawyer, Gesta Abols, in an article on cross-border transactions.

Gesta Abols, a partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP in Toronto, and co-leader of the law firm’s cross-border and international practice, said he expects to see growth in public-to-private transactions involving private-equity buyers.

“My main observation is that the gulf between private and public markets in terms of valuation is at an all-time high,” he said.

While “some activity might be viewed as opportunistic by targets and could be in the form of hostile bids,” Abols said he thinks the current valuation gap leaves room for both a public seller and a private buyer to view the deal as favourable.
