Montréal Partner and Trademark Agent, Jean-Philippe Mikus, comments on the new French-language rules that took effect on June 1 in Québec, in an article published in The Gazette.
He recommends to companies that might be targeted by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) to cooperate in the process and avoid adopting a confrontational attitude.
“Generally when you show the OQLF you’re co-operating in the process, they won’t necessarily impose a fine right away,” said Partner Jean-Philippe Mikus, adding that “if a company receives a letter from the OQLF, before having a knee-jerk reaction and responding with an email saying all sorts of things, it might be wise to consult a lawyer, given the level of fines.”
