Montréal Associate Daphnée Legault discusses employers’ obligations regarding the impacts that sensitive events—such as the Tumbler Ridge tragedy—can have in the workplace, in an article published in Canadian HR Reporter.
Daphnée Legault notes that this type of situation can create concern or discomfort among employees, particularly when the events affect a marginalized group that is already vulnerable to stereotypes or misconceptions. She adds that such events can reveal gaps in workplace policies and manager training, and she encourages organizations to review their frameworks to ensure adequate protection for employees.
“Moments like these can actually be an opportunity to review whether current workplace policies, training, and investigative processes are doing what they’re supposed to do, and whether they’re truly accessible and protective enough,” said Daphnée Legault. “Events of this magnitude tend to expose gaps we might not have noticed before.”
