Toronto (Canada) – Fasken congratulates partner Rahat Godil on her appointment as a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Newmarket. The appointment was announced on October 30, 2026, by the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
Rahat Godil joined Fasken as a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group in 2021. A business-minded litigator, she built a diverse practice focused on complex commercial litigation and domestic and international arbitration. She regularly advised clients on high-value and business-critical contractual and commercial disputes, multi-party and international matters, joint venture disputes, shareholder and director disputes, and oppression claims.
Over the course of her career, Rahat Godil appeared as counsel at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada and the Ontario Court of Appeal, as well as before domestic and international arbitral tribunals. Her arbitration practice and advocacy were recognized by several leading legal directories.
Rahat Godil has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to mentorship, inclusion and the advancement of the legal profession. She was a founding member of Fasken’s Empower Network, which supports and develops the careers of racialized legal professionals at the firm, and Co-Chair of the Ontario Women’s Network, and actively mentored students and associates. She also contributed to the South Asian Bar Association and the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association, and participated in continuing legal education and advocacy programs.
“We extend our warmest congratulations to Rahat on this well-deserved appointment,” said Clarke Barnes, Firm Managing Partner, and Neil Kravitz, Firm Managing Partner-Elect. “Rahat is an exceptional advocate and colleague whose sound judgment, integrity and commitment to excellence have made a lasting contribution to our Firm and the broader legal community. We are confident that these qualities will serve the Court and the people of Ontario exceptionally well.”
“Rahat has distinguished herself as a talented and strategic litigator, a trusted adviser to her clients and a dedicated leader,” said Karen Sargeant, Managing Partner, Ontario. “She has also been a generous mentor and a passionate champion of equity, diversity and inclusion. While she will be greatly missed at Fasken, we are immensely proud of her appointment and know that she will make an outstanding contribution to the judiciary.”
Please join us in congratulating Rahat Godil and wishing her every success in this new chapter.
