Overview

Randal (Randy) Hughes is Counsel in Fasken’s Competition, Marketing & Foreign Investment group in Toronto and is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading competition lawyers.

Randy advises on the competition law and Investment Canada aspects of complex domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and regularly represents clients in criminal proceedings under the Competition Act and in reviewable matters before the Competition Tribunal.

Randy has extensive experience acting for clients in domestic and international cartel investigations and prosecutions involving the Competition Bureau and competition authorities worldwide. Randy has served as a non-governmental advisor to the International Competition Network (ICN) at Cartel Workshops and Annual Conferences, on the faculty of the ABA/IBA International Cartel Workshops, and as a member of the ABA Antitrust Section’s International Cartel Task Force. He previously served as Vice Chair of the Section’s Cartel and Criminal Practice Committee and currently serves as Competition Authorities Liaison Officer of the IBA Antitrust Section.

Randy has also appeared before commissions of inquiry of national significance, notably the Dubin Inquiry into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport and the Krever Inquiry into the blood system in Canada where he appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada.

In addition, Randy serves as an Advisor to the Board of The Interlex Group, an elite network of leading independent law firms serving clients around the world.

Randy has been consistently recognized in leading national and international legal directories, including Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Legal 500: Canada, Global Competition Review (GCR 100), Who’s Who Legal: Canada, Lexpert/The American Lawyer Guide, and other prominent rankings.
