Craig Brown is an active member of several practice groups including Securities and Mergers & Acquisition, Emerging Technology and the Asia Pacific Practice Group. His transaction-oriented practice is focused on advising high-growth Canadian companies with a global outlook, as well as leading investment dealers, merchant banks and VC/private equity funds that provide financing to them.
An expert in the areas of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance, Craig provides strategic legal and business advice to help companies realize their potential in both Canada and in new foreign markets. While Craig’s practice is sector-agnostic, he has for the past decade been extensively engaged with a wide variety of leading participants in the dynamic Ontario innovation ecosystem. In addition to providing excellent legal advice, Craig seeks to intermediate opportunities for all clients, including sourcing qualified investment targets for VC and private equity clients and introducing promising early-stage companies to strategic partners and investment groups capable of providing transformational growth capital.
Craig was instrumental in the development of Fasken's innovative SEED program. This legal services delivery initiative was designed to support exceptional early stage technology companies in a cost-effective manner. Cognizant of the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs, Craig championed hiring a seasoned entrepreneur who is also an experienced lawyer, to run the SEED program and, as “entrepreneur-in-residence”, to be the program’s principal interface with the firm’s entrepreneurial clients. The extensive contributions made by Craig and his partners to Canada’s innovation community resulted in Fasken being ranked in 2017 by Chambers and Partners as one of only three firms in Canada in the top band of law firms serving startups and emerging companies.
He is also a senior member of the firm’s Asia Pacific Practice Group and Co-leader of the firm’s India Team, assisting with client relationships across these important, international markets and providing business development leadership in in India and Southeast Asia.
Prior to joining the firm in April 2002, Craig was co-chair of the technology group of another major Toronto law firm. He also has extensive governance experience, having served as director of several private and public companies and not for profit charitable organizations including Invest Toronto Corporation. This organization was responsible for the organization responsible for the City of Toronto’s international investment attraction activities.
Recognized by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, he is a Member of the Canada India Business Council and the Canadian Venture Capital Association.
