On behalf of Fasken Martineau, the Fasken Martineau Pride Network invites you to our June Pride month celebration, which will focus on issues affecting members of the LGBTQ community who are newcomers to Canada or seeking entry to Canada. A panel which includes a legal professional, community and program leaders, and newcomers to Canada who identify as LGBTQ, will provide insight on Canada’s immigration system, settlement programs, and the challenges facing LGBTQ persons who are seeking to immigrate to Canada, including members of the community who are fleeing persecution. In a broad-ranging discussion, panelists will address issues such as sponsorship of same-sex partners, the ability to change sex designation on immigration documents, refugee claims arising from persecution of the LGBTQ community, including the current crisis in Chechnya, navigating new cultural norms upon arrival in Canada, access to community programs, and the particular vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQ newcomers.
Join us for an informative and timely discussion of these pressing issues, and stay with us afterward for our reception as we celebrate Pride and our shared diversity. Please share this invitation freely with friends, colleagues or others who may be interested in attending. All are welcome! Please note the early start time for this event. RSVP early as space is limited.
