A panel discussion among experts in community and Indigenous population engagement from each of Peru, South Africa and Canada. The panel will explore recent developments in each of their respective jurisdictions in relation to new and evolving legal strategies being employed by Indigenous communities to further their participation in mineral resource development decision making. The panel discussion will include the increasing (and effective) use of the court systems by indigenous communities to define consultation and establish/protect their rights and touch on the laws applicable in each of these jurisdictions.
There will be an interactive discussion off the back of the initial part of the analysis, evaluating the impact these strategies have on Government and developer responses, including integration by developers into to community engagement approaches, licensing and permitting regimes, resource development decisions and the evolution of FPIC.
