Toronto (Canada) – Fasken Partners Ally Bharmal and Brad Freelan have been named the 2018 Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 winners. This award recognizes and honours their contributions to the Firm, legal profession and larger community.
The award was presented last night at a gala dinner in Toronto. Each year, Lexpert celebrates Canada’s leading lawyers, in this demographic, who are rising stars of the legal community.
Ally is a corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and corporate/commercial Partner in Fasken’s Vancouver office. He primarily advises private companies in the technology and food and beverage sectors, with an emphasis on start-up and incorporation matters, angel and venture capital financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, board governance and ongoing commercial matters. Ally has acted on over one hundred venture capital or similar financing transactions and on some of BC’s most prominent recent mergers and acquisitions deals, making him one of the leading young lawyers nationally in these areas. Dedicated to community service, Ally serves as Legal Member of the Aga Khan Council for Canada, as a Director of the BC Food Processors Association and of TiE Vancouver, and with various community organizations supporting the needs of children, including Social Venture Partners and BC Children’s Hospital. He is also a regular speaker at events for both the food and beverage and technology industries.
Brad is a Partner in the Firm’s Toronto office. His practice is focused on corporate and securities law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, shareholder activism, and corporate finance. Brad frequently represents acquirors and targets across a broad range of industries in both public and private M&A transactions and frequently provides governance advice to boards and special committees. He has significant experience assisting clients with contested situations, including hostile bids, topping offers and proxy contests, and has co-authored several publications on shareholder activism, proxy contests and hostile bids. Actively involved in the community, Brad has served as a director of Epilepsy Toronto and as member of the Sunny View Youth Council. He is also a mentor to law students at the University of Toronto.
