Overview

“Antitrust exemptions being used to push broader policy objectives in South Africa,” by Janith Aranze, Global Competition Review

Johannesburg Partner Leana Engelbrecht comments on the government of South Africa’s increased use of sector-wide antitrust exemptions to address economic problems in an article published in Global Competition Review

She said the granting of exemptions in specific sectors such as ports and rails logistics and sugar is designed to ensure those markets remain competitive rather than protecting them from outside competition.

“I think the block exemptions will always be informed by a broader government policy and used as a tool to achieve those policies,” said Partner Leana Engelbrecht.
