Overview

“Alberta used AI to draft its whisky act, giving Canada’s legal community a buzz,” by Rita Trichur, The Globe and Mail

The bulletins Distilled Law, Part 1: Whisky Business: Alberta’s New Spirit Standards and the Future of AI Use in Legislative Drafting and Distilled Law, Part 2: AI-Assisted Legislative Drafting and Alberta’s Whisky Act, co-authored by a group of Fasken partners and associates, are referenced in a column in The Globe and Mail.

The column draws on Fasken’s analyses to explore the potential implications of the Alberta government’s use of AI to assist in drafting the province’s Whisky Act, believed to be the first use of the technology for legislative drafting by a Canadian jurisdiction.

From the article: “Fasken’s analysis appropriately highlights the ‘limitations of AI-assisted legislative drafting,’ even if the technology can tackle tedious, time-consuming tasks such as synthesizing large amounts of information and flagging factual errors. It stresses that drafting legislation also ‘requires contextual knowledge and judgment’ about a government’s policy objectives and any real-world consequences for citizens.”
