On February 22, 2006, MDS Inc. announced the conclusion of a comprehensive mediation process with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) related to the construction, commissioning and operation of the MAPLE reactors and associated New Processing Facility in Chalk River, Ontario and the long term secure supply of radioisotopes.
MDS Nordion is the largest supplier of radioisotopes used in cancer treatment worldwide. The raw material for radioisotopes is produced by AECL in its general purpose nuclear reactor, NRU. This technology and business is one of Canada's high tech medical success stories.
The mediation involved John Campion and Paul Monahan (litigation) of Fasken Martineau for MDS Nordion.
The agreement was negotiated for MDS Nordion under the direction of Peter Brent, Vice-President, Legal and Corporate Secretary of MDS Inc. with the support of a team from Fasken Martineau comprised of Scott Conover and Doug Scott (corporate), Lisa Abe and Jason Kee (technology outsourcing), Alan Schwartz and David Robertson (tax), and Jon Holmstrom (structuring).
