We obtained judgment for nearly C$4 million, plus C$185,000 in punitive damages on behalf of the victim of a complex commercial fraud involving a luxury vehicle importing scheme. The defendant perpetrated the fraud through an elaborate system of fake documents, emails and business contacts.
The client was granted an injunction to freeze the defendants’ assets in June 2019. The defendant admitted the fraud under cross-examination in pre-trial discovery in February 2020 but, allegedly, refused to disclose what happened to the plaintiff’s assets. In July 2021, we successfully obtained judgment after a summary trial and a finding of contempt for breach of the injunction.
